In the latest edition of Geospatial Genius, Felipe Alfaya, a Remote Sensing Specialist from Alvaz explains how the company uses LP360 drone software to analyze LiDAR data collected from corn fields can provide accurate plant canopy and height measurements, as well as structure design of the crop.

“We use LP360 in projects for calculating plant canopy and structure design,” Alfaya explains. “But we have some research projects that we are still developing that are not yet ready for the market, and we intend to use the TrueView LiDAR, designed for several other agricultural applications that involve plant structure.”

The software tools in LP360 help analyze and provide direct structural information, making it an ideal tool for agricultural applications that involve plant structure. By creating an elevation model of the area being analyzed, LP360 can capture the smallest details of the plant structure and provide valuable information such as the tallest and shortest plant measurements, average height, and standard deviation.

Traditionally, plant height measurements were done with an RGB sensor and photogrammetric processes, which could only provide information on the plot height average. However, with LP360, detailed information on individual plants, plot lines, and the plants in the plot can be obtained. This level of detail allows for more precise analysis of the crop, which can help optimize crop management practices and increase yields.
