MICRODRONES DIGS INTO LIDAR AT AFRICAN MINING SUMMIT 2019

Excitement and optimism infused this year’s African Mining Summit (AMS), which took place in Gaborone, Botswana on September 24-25, 2019. During the two-day event, Microdrones UAV experts met with leaders from 45 mining companies and ministries to discuss the profound opportunities that exist in African mining — and how Microdrones mdLiDAR1000 can help users to seize these opportunities.

“The future of mining in Africa is bright,” explained Hanno Truter, Microdrones sales manager in Africa. “There are still vast untouched mineral deposits on the continent, and our mdLiDAR1000 offers a complete UAV solution that is ideal for the mining industry.”

Mining Review Africa described the event as “one of the only truly pan-African mining events where high-level delegates such as government representatives from established and emerging mining economies, mining executives, financiers, and suppliers come together.”

Attendees and presenters of the 5th annual summit spent the majority of their time discussing approaches, challenges, and technology involved in African mining, as well as the potential of the industry to help transform life on the continent. Some of the untapped natural resources that comprise Africa’s rich interior include gold, diamonds, uranium, platinum, nickel, bauxite, and cobalt.

Microdrones mdLiDAR1000 system was developed specifically to handle the applications necessary to explore and excavate these types of minerals as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. The Microdrones team made it their mission to show off the many ways this system can revolutionize mining operations and expedite industry progress in Africa.

“The mdLiDAR1000 is an all-in-one solution for mining professionals,” said Truter. “Complete with unmanned aircraft, sensors, hardware, software, workflow, and support, mdLiDAR1000 equips the industry with powerful surveying and mapping capabilities.”

The LiDAR sensors integrated in this system allow users to achieve intense accuracy in their day-to-day operations, and to quickly generate 3-D digital terrain models (DTM). mdLiDAR1000 makes it easy for miners to survey and measure mining progress multiple times per day, map deposit sites, monitor volumes, explore for minerals, and track expensive equipment.

In addition to demonstrating mdLiDAR1000 at the summit, the Microdrones team participated in exhibitions, presentations, panels, and networking, all while interacting with the continent’s top mining companies, as well as leaders from the African Union Commission, the Department of Trade industry, the Economic Commission of Africa and Ministry of Mineral Resources, and Green Technology & Energy Security in Botswana.

“It was a pleasure to be able to engage with the continent’s mining leaders at this well-organized event, and to share how Microdrones UAV solutions can help the industry get to work more quickly in Africa,” said Truter. “Our solutions give miners everything they need to streamline the job, improve results, and increase profits. It is exciting to know we could play a role in advancing the industry and promoting economic prosperity in Africa.”
