UAV University with MVCC

The Mohawk Valley Community College recently created a video for their two-year Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems Program that features the Microdrones md4-1000.

MVCC started its program in 2015, led by Professor Bill Judycki, an electrical engineer and a licensed pilot.  According to Professor Judycki, the MVCC two-year program is one of only four in the country that allows students to design, build, test, program, fly and apply RPAS technology.

The curriculum of the Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems degree includes the mechanics, electronics, and software programming of the RPAS. Students use MVCC’s FABLab to explore modeling and fabrication of designs created using AutoCAD and learn about Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and remote sensing capabilities used in RPAS operations.

The program qualifies students for the building and repair of remotely piloted aircraft systems, flight by operator, programming for autonomous flight, the use of the latest mapping and photogrammetry software (PIX4D), and the use of the latest remote sensing packages such as therma, multispectral, and LiDAR.

One of the main UAV’s used in the field and classroom is the Microdrones md4-1000. Judycki selected Microdrones integrated systems because his students could use the platform for a variety of missions including mapping, surveillance, and crop monitoring. The Microdrones solution makes it easy to change out payloads and the company also offers a level of support Judycki hasn’t found anywhere else.

“Our team is absolutely positively ecstatic about the great support Microdrones offers,” he said. “I’ve bought a lot of different aircraft from different vendors and most of the time they sell you stuff then say ‘bye, don’t bother me.’ Microdrones has gone way above and beyond with their support and are great to deal with. They’re always just a phone call away. They also provide excellent training.”

The MVCC program has also proven beneficial to Microdrones as one of Judycki’s recent graduates is now working full time at Microdrones as a pilot.
