Methane Gas Detection With a Drone

Recently, Microdrones, working with their distributor Optron, partnered with Hommeltek to perform a UAV/drone demonstration and proof of concept with the Microdrones mdTector1000CH4, in Maraisburg, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Finding Gas Leaks with mdTector1000CH4

Hanno Truter, Sales Manager for Microdrones Africa, based in Johannesburg, South Africa, helped coordinate the demonstration between Optron and HommelTEK.  Optron supplies and supports products in most countries across sub-Saharan Africa, with the assistance of a select network of re-sellers and agents. HommelTEK is an innovative technology company focusing on providing clients with unique data capturing and modelling solutions using sophisticated data acquisition sensors mounted on aerial, mobile and static devices.

The location in Maraisburg, Johannesburg, South Africa, was selected since it was a known area for gas leaks in domestic gas pipe infrastructure. The Microdrones mdTector1000CH4, is a fully integrated aerial methane inspection package, that consists of a Pergam gas sensor, mounted and integrated perfectly with a Microdrones md4-1000 UAV. It has an onboard HD video link. That means that you can see in real time what you are detecting with the laser sensor.

Henno Morkel, Optron’s UAV Technical Specialist and Drone Pilot, along with Stephan van der Merwe, a Geospatial Segment Manager at OPTRON worked with Hanno Truter to execute the flight demonstration and mission at the site.

The image shows the flight line and the areas where gas leaks were detected in different colors. Areas where no gas was detected are displayed with a red cross.

The team located a property with multiple gas leaks detected in front of it. On the ground, the crew walked over to the area for a closer inspection and found that the local gas company had already marked the area for gas leaks, thus demonstrating the accuracy of the mdTector1000CH4.
