Down to Earth, a surveying reality series, heads back into the marshes of Southern Louisiana for a challenging project with Duplantis Design Group to survey a 1,200 acre site for both residential and industrial development. However, the area to be surveyed lies in between a bayou, the Intercoastal Waterway, and a large floating marsh- making traditional surveying methods difficult and treacherous.

“Down to Earth” is a reality series that shows how real surveyors collect data and turn it into real deliverables, despite challenging terrain, rough weather, and hidden dangers.
On these new episodes of Down to Earth, their UAV Pilot Justin Schech is sent to a project near Houma, Louisiana, to survey a large site for both residential and industrial development. To expedite the survey, DDG is using Drone LiDAR to avoid the dangers in the marsh safely from the air above. However, this project is also in close proximity to the Houma-Terrebonne Airport, meaning additional air clearance must be obtained to operate the drone.
In the first episode, Schech reviews the project, the mission plan, and sets out to capture the data with the mdLiDAR1000.
Episode 2 introduces Corey Macmenamin, the Survey Business Unit Leader for DDG, and he explains why the drone surveying equipment is perfect for this project.
He said, “We wanted to use LiDAR, because a lot of the areas in Houma, up against the Intercoastal Canal specifically, are floating marsh, which is very difficult to access by foot and seemingly the only way to get this job done in a timely fashion was to use the drone LiDAR.”
To see how the data is processed and visualized, Episode 3 heads back to the Covington, Louisiana office of DDG, where their draftsman sits with Robert Chrismon, the Voice of the Customer for Microdrones and reviews the data to show how the final deliverable is created.
“The difference of what we bring to the table today,” Macmenamin explains, “as to what we were capable of doing 25 years ago when I started surveying, is night and day. The drone solutions provided by Microdrones, with the deliverable, the quality of product, and density of data, changes the way we do things.”
Don’t miss these episodes of Down to Earth, where Justin will have to divide his attention from the pitfalls of the marsh and the traffic in the sky to get this job done safely; all while dealing with the tumultuous Louisiana weather. See if he can maintain air control and deliver this project on time.
